Short-Note
Grade 6 Mathematics: Data Interpretation
Data interpretation is the process of drawing various information from data that is represented in picture graphs and tables . By studying this lesson, students develop the ability to interpret these specific types of data representations .
1. Interpreting Data Represented in Tables
- When data are provided numerically within a table, data interpretation can be performed directly in terms of these numbers .
- These numerical values can be used to perform calculations such as finding the total amounts, calculating the differences between categories, and determining ratios .
- Tables allow you to easily draw conclusions about which categories represent the highest or lowest sales, quantities, or values .
2. Interpreting Data Represented in Picture Graphs
- Picture graphs utilize specific symbols to represent a predetermined quantity of items, such as a vehicle symbol representing 10 vehicles or a ticket symbol representing 100 tickets .
- When data are represented by picture graphs, data interpretation corresponding to the comparison of data can be done much more conveniently .
- By observing the symbols, it is easy to make quick visual interpretations, such as identifying which item appears the most, which appears the least, and visually comparing multiples (e.g., seeing that one category has five times the amount of another) .
